Nutrition Information

Krispy Krunch Rat & Mouse Food
has been specifically designed to meet the nutritional needs of your pet rat or mouse. The ingredients used may vary slightly due to availability.

A nutritionally ballanced diet for your rat or mouse is believed to increase the lifespan of these gorgeous but short lived creatures. The average lifespan of a pet rat is between two and three years, and approximately two years for mice. Long enough for us to become attached to them and miss them dearly when they go to the Rainbow Bridge.

All mammals need a diet consisting of different components in varying amounts. These can roughly be divided into carbohydrates, protein, fat, fibre, vitamins and minerals.

  • Carbohydrates are a staple of a rodents diet and include high-energy, low fat foods like cereals and grains.
  • Protein is essential for growth, repair (eg. body cells, bones, blood supply) and general rodent well-being. Excessive protein can lead to kidney failure and death, however too little will result in stunted growth and poor health. Rodents are omnivorous and require animal protein in their diet for ultimate health.
  • Fats provide a high source of energy and are necessary for growth and good coat condition. Fed in excess rodents are at risk of becoming overweight and face similar health problems to overweight people.
  • Fiber is not a major factor to consider in your rodents diet, and all fiber needs can be met  through the feeding of cereals and grains.
  • Vitamins and Minerals are vital for good health in rodents as they are in people. A balanced diet of a quality grain/cereal based mix and fresh fruit and vegetables generally provides them with all that they need. To ensure all nutritional needs are being met my boys have access to a mineral lick stone. However, after a few half-hearted nibbled I replaced this with a water soluble vitamin and mineral supplement.

I supplement this diet with
fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish,
and occasional table scraps.
